Joe Duvall is a self-taught artist and Coast Guard veteran originally from Phoenix, Arizona, and now based in Jacksonville, Florida. His journey began after separating the military in 2021 following a major car accident. From months of physical and mental hardship in recovery, Joe channelled his struggles through basic woodworking as a hobby. Over the years, he worked through the obstacles of creating his own business and developing his skills as his health began to improve.

Working primarily with resin and exotic hardwoods, Joe creates everything from small, highly detailed custom pieces to full-scale, functional furniture. His work blends traditional craftsmanship with artistic expression, allowing the natural character of each piece of wood to become part of the finished work.

His mission is to support the veteran community with his skills and give back to the network that shaped his early years.

Now working in North Florida, Joe has had the privilege of showcasing his work at art shows, markets and supporting veteran organizations throughout the region. His work reflects a dedication to craftsmanship, individuality, and the belief that functional objects can also be meaningful works of art.

“I was always the black sheep growing up. Never fitting in was a pretty common theme throughout my life. My favorite animal was always a bear for its quiet strength and introspection. Thus, we got the name Black Bear Studio.”
